It's Raining It's Pouring

Trad/ Will and Al Simmons

Will was six when he and I were driving home one rainy evening and I started to sing this traditional song. Normally he would join in with what ever I was singing, but this time he just sat quietly, so I finished the song and drove on in silence. A minute later he burst out singing and pounding out a Caribbean rhythm on the dashboard: "He couldn't get up in the morning. He couldn't get up in the night." I pulled the car over and wrote his ideas down. Once I was home I added the rest of the verses. The video of this song is featured on my “I Collect Rocks” DVD .

E

It's raining it's pouring

The old man is snoring

B7

He bumped his head

On the end of the bed

B7 E

He couldn't get up in the morning.

E A E B7 Turn on his alarm clock, set it for quarter to four

E A E B7 E

Drag him out of bed and, put his feet on the floor

E A E B7

You can find him a shovel; you can find him a rake,

E A E B7E

You can find him a job, but you won't find him awake.

It's snowing it's blowing The old man is going

To sleep all year

And never hear

The rooster c-c-crowing

It's raining it's pouring

The old man is snoring

He bumped his head

On the end of the bed

He couldn't get up in the morning.

EA

He couldn't get up in the morning

E B7

He couldn't get up in the night.

EA

He couldn't get up in the morning

E B7 E

He couldn't get up in the night.

Make a change in the weather, like a gentle breeze.

Tickle his nose with a feather try to make him sneeze.

Typhoon, or avalanche, lightning, or thunderclap

Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night will wake him from his

nap

Tornado and hurricane,

Accompanied by torrential rain,

Turning to snow at 40 below

The ice age has come again

It's raining it's pouring

The old man is snoring

He bumped his head

On the end of the bed

He couldn't get up in the morning.

He couldn't get up in the morning He couldn't get up in the night. Repeat
